But not anymore. Google now applies its “deduplication” algorithm, in which the URL only appears once on the first page of search results. If displayed in an additional section, the URL will not appear in the top 10 organic results.

However, if it is ranked 11, the organic position of the URL is not affected.

In general, deduplication is not good for publishers because they lose potential positions. But I haven’t seen recent data on clicks of additional sections compared to traditional organic lists.

The lack of data is understandable because Google’s search results pages are no longer predictable. Each results page is different with different sections and rankings, all based on browser and device.

What we do know is that all the additional sections for information searches appear.

There is no easy way to track traffic from these additional sections. Google does not include it in Analytics or the Search Console.

So it’s probably bad news if Google lists your product or landing page in one of those sections, especially if its organic position was in the top 10.

The existence of additional sections and a related deduplication algorithm is an SEO challenge without an obvious solution. There is not much we can do about it.

We cannot avoid appearing in additional sections. There is no easy SEO tactic that emphasizes organic ranking while bypassing those other areas.

If you find that an additional section is causing a reduction in traffic, consider creating a second page to target that search term. Google Deduplication applies to identical URLs. Two unique ranking pages for the same term can cause one to retain organic ranking and the other to appear in an additional section.

But don’t create a copied page. Analyze your search results to understand how each page can be different.

For example, if your home page contains paragraphs of instructions, create a relevant list that summarizes each step. Or compose a video and publish a transcript with an embedded video. That page could appear in a video carousel.

However, don’t try to “deoptimize” a page to remove it from additional sections. You risk losing her organic rank completely.
