Strictly speaking, there is nothing different when it comes to how search engines treat a microsite against a regular website.

They still look at URLs, links, titles, content, and hundreds of other ranking factors so the same SEO best practices for diagnosing a drop in rankings will apply to microsites as well. .

Let’s First Talk About Traffic Drops

I want to share some thoughts on microsites in general, but before we do that let’s look at how to deal with that traffic slowdown.

The specific answer to your metadata question is: Maybe.

If you’ve drastically changed your title tag from being relevant to your page to, say, “home” – then you’re probably not ranking for your query either, and you won’t get many clicks if you rank.

(Gentle reminder: meta descriptions and keywords are not ranking factors in major search engines. However, a description may affect your clickthrough rates – when Google decides to actually show the one I wrote.)

The good news is, turning it back on and seeing what happens is a really easy and quick test to do.

The first thing to do when there is a traffic drop with any site is to understand where the traffic drop occurred.

Is it a specific question or a set of questions? is it a specific page or group of pages? Is the whole site?

Look for patterns. It could be a single “style” of the keyword (for example, keywords around a specific section of the site) or it could be a certain page template.

This information can get you where you are looking.

Once you know where the traffic is slowing down, search for that question / page and see what happens.

If you don’t see anything, check your site for a technical issue.

If you appear, has anyone else exceeded your position?

If you missed the rankings, you should first ask what changes were made to the page.

Often an unwanted title tag or a change in content or a random technical issue can be to blame.

Assuming there is no fault change, the next step requires some soul searching.

Ask yourself: “Is this really the best result for a user? if i were looking for this question, is this what i would like? Is it better than what is beating me? ”

As SEO professionals we often think in terms of push marketing – “how do I rate this page for this question” but true success comes from a pull marketing mindset that understands what it is trying to do the user and create something to accomplish it.

We’ve been seeing this a lot lately with major Google updates.

Look for questions that used to return product description pages now return recommendations and curated lists of the best products in that category.

Google has decided that these pages serve the user better than a single product page.

If something like this is happening in your area, the only solution is to re-evaluate your content in the context of the query and what the engines are showing.

Usually, this is not fast or cheap, but it is the best way to succeed.

Except for a few rare cases, I’m not a big fan of microsites.

Big brands love them because they can hire a cheaper / faster vendor to get into a smaller project and keep it separate from the code, budgets, processes, etc. of their main website – but there are many disadvantages.

I’ve seen companies implement microsites to the point where user flow has taken place: log in to the main website, click a promo to go to the microsite, and then click another call to action back to the main website.

That just seems like a lot of unnecessary overhead that introduces more jump points for conversion.

It can also be an analytical tracking nightmare.

From a strictly SEO perspective, a microsite is restarting without any PageRank, link juice, or domain authority of the main website.

Whether you believe in such metrics or not, links still matter – and microsites often have fewer links to their pages than if they were placed in the main domain.

The other issue is competition. Often a microsite made by another agency does not collaborate with the agency that makes the main website, and they end up competing for the same keywords.

In some areas it may be a good idea to own the search results and push down other pages – but the key here is to have a plan and collaborate with the main site.

Possessing multiple search results or pushing something else down to ORM (online reputation management) can be one of the reasons why you want a microsite.

A paid search may also be another reason.

Google and Bing will not allow you to serve two ads from the same domain, but if you have a microsite you can place 2 different ads on the same question.

However, in general, if there is no good reason for a microsite, I would only recommend creating a new page or section on the main website.

When in doubt, let the user experience dictate the decision, not SEO.

If it will be marked differently or there is a good reason to keep users away from each other, make a microsite.

If not, you will get stronger and more successful rankings by including it in the main domain.
